Met up with Juliette at the Paris Mosque for a coffee and chat before she headed off to Noirmoutier. Next time we meet will be in Lisbon for the Urban Sketchers Symposium - we are v excited and had lots to discuss!
La Grande Mosquée is a beautiful structure located next to the Jardin des Plantes in the 5th arrondissement, with an ornate tea room, restaurant and hammam to the side open to the general public year-round. Sitting in one of the tiled patios drinking mint tea and smoking a hubbly bubbly is like being transported to another world, and it is so peaceful there that the sparrows literally hop up to your plate for crumbs if you let them.
The mosque itself is a place of worship, and non-Muslims can take a guided tour.
This has always been one of my favorite spots, and I just read that it also served as a secret refuge during World War II for those persecuted by the Axis powers, providing shelter, safe passage, and fake Muslim birth certificates for Jewish children. I appreciate the place even more now.
