August 15th is a bank holiday here in France, right smack in the middle of summer vacation to boot. So on what was probably the "quietest" day of
the year, a few Paris Sketchers met for a stroll along the Seine to
check out the new riverfront promenade called "Les Berges" (official website here)..
We quickly came across a pretty cool spot called the Zzz area, which is a bunch of shipping containers each set up in an individual mini-garden. Anyone with ID can book one for private use -- to take a nap, read a book, or simply chill out and enjoy the view.
Puff pillows and chairs are provided for lounging inside, and picnic tables and hammocks are also available. The containers have lighting, electrical sockets and heaters for the winter. Use of the spaces is free, but you have to book your 1 1/2 hour time slot in advance.
The guy minding the space came over to chat with us while we were drawing, and said that the Zzz containers have been a big hit with all kinds of people, including local office workers who come down during their breaks. Apparently the spaces were fully booked for the month of July. No wonder!
Further down the quay, heading towards the Grand Palais, we stopped at "En Attendant Rosa" for snacks. This is going to be a "guinguette" style bar and dance barge by the same folks at Le Rosa Bonheur in the Buttes de Chaumont, and the opening is scheduled for December of this year. Meanwhile, an outdoor bar (with tables and more shipping containers) is open for the wait...
It was a great day
that made us almost forget we were in the middle of a city, with lots to
discover. Like the "Paris Plages" beach project, I think that the
Berges is going to be a big hit. Even better – it's for all year round
this time. Check it out!
